New Contact Singapore office in Sydney!

It has been an exciting and eventful period over the last few months. With the decision of opening Contact Singapore’s new office in Sydney, Australia, I have been entrusted with the task of setting upthe new office and carrying out Contact Singapore’s work since 01 May.

Adapting to work cultural differences is challenging. Dealing with nitty gritty details of the physical office set-up is time consuming. However it has been a great learning curve for me. I am fortunate too, to have engaged a great assistant, Jancis Tan, who joined our Australian team this month.

While the office is being set-up, we have also been preparing our showcase of Singapore’s career opportunities in Australia. We are ready to start the ball rolling with a series of exciting events in September and October.

For job seekers, check out our jobs portal site and register yourself online to increase your profile amongst the employers! For all university students, do not forget to check out the following websites for the global careers fairs in September happening in various cities. If you would like to find out more about working and living in Singapore, Jancis and I will be at the following events to meet you.

Sept 1 - International Career Fair, Brisbane, http://www.careersfair.org.au

Sept 4 & 5 - Global Careers Expo, UTS, Sydney - http://www.ssu.uts.edu.au/careers/employers/crp/global_fair.html

Sept 8 - University of Melbourne (Melbourne) - http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/careers/employers/recruiting/fairs/global.html

Sept 15 - Curtin University (Perth) - http://careers.curtin.edu.au/employers/global08.html

Forging Singapore’s appeal as a career destination

We kicked off 2008 with a big bang with our signature event – LINKS 2008. The careers symposium and networking session aims to keep tertiary students in Australia and New Zealand universities informed about key industry developments, the employment landscape and career opportunities in Singapore.
Held in Singapore on 11th January 2008, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, LINKS 2008 attracted about 350 tertiary students (and more than 700 registered and submitted their CVs online!) almost a three-fold increase from 2007 - and foreign students’ attendance more than doubled this year.

This is very encouraging indeed, since strong interest from both Overseas Singaporeans and non-Singaporean students signals Singapore’s continued appeal as a career destination despite stiffer global competition for talent.

Leading organisations such as A*STAR, CapitaLand, Ernst & Young, SingHealth, KPMG, Yokogawa and Merck Sharpe & Dohme were also present to share latest industry trends and insights to students gleaned from years of personal experience. The event attracted a total of 17 organisations to recruit and talent spot for current and future manpower needs

This year, we are very honoured to have Mr. Gan Kim Yong (Minister of State for Education and Manpower) to share with the audience the strong economic growth and abundant opportunities available in Singapore and engaged the audience in a lively question and answer session.

Following that, we had three breakout sessions where 11 industry speakers from the Financial Services, Healthcare and Biomedical Research and Technology sectors were on hand to share their updates and insights.

For those of you who are in Australia and could not attend LINKS, your next opportunity to meet with Singapore-based employers would be the upcoming Finance and Technology road shows in March 2008, held in various cities in Australia. Do check back on this website for more updates!

Movies Under the Banyan Tree

Apart from the erratic tropical thunderstorms, the good thing about living in Singapore is that we get to enjoy a good range of indoor activities outdoors.

Singapore National Museum  (newly-renovated – a must-visit if you are in Singapore) is having movie screenings every month under the banyan tree (which has been there for as long as I can remember), outside the museum. The stars and shows are free. There is a selection of hotdogs, popcorn and candy floss to enjoy, as well as prizes to be won at the movie trivia.

Breakfast at Tiffany is on tonight. We get to leave work early on Fridays. That means I get to the movie on time with my picnic basket of some really good camembert cheese and Bordeaux.

ABOUT

Bay Wee Lim

Every time I start mixing paints to work on my art canvases, I discover a new shade of colour. My favourite piece is one which I eventually named ‘a thousand shades of blue’. I realised that if I had stuck to only one tube of colour, the painting would never look like what it is. Same with anything else life I guess - you just got to keep trying till you get it.
