Medical Care for the ElderlyMany older people prefer to live in a familiar environment with their family members and friends. However, in the event that the older person and/or the family cannot manage to care or support the needs of the older person, community healthcare services may be required to help the older person to remain at home. These community healthcare services may be provided at home or in a centre. Senior Citizens’ Healthcare Centres Some polyclinics have Senior Citizens’ Healthcare Centres which have been set up to serve the elderly, making it possible for them to avoid hospital stays and be cared for at home. The charges are nominal, ranging from S$5.00 to S$20.00 a day. Parents of permanent residents who are here on long-term social visit passes are eligible for these services:
Home-Based Services Healthcare services can be provided within the homes of the older persons. The healthcare services would be medical, nursing or palliative care.
Centre-Based Services Healthcare services may also be provided within a centre. The older person will attend these centres during the day, usually on a regular basis, but will go back to their own homes for the night.
