Electronics & Precision Engineering

Industry Snapshots:

  • Electronics & Precision Engineering are the most established industries in Singapore.
  • They contribute to 42% of the country's manufacturing output.
  • Singapore has a strong knowledge-intensive manufacturing base.
  • Singapore is well placed to become the manufacturing hub for emerging technologies in Asia.
  • Read news on the Engineering industry.

Electronics

Electronics is the largest contributor to the manufacturing sector, with annual total output of S$75 billion, employing 90,933 workers and contributing about 7.15% of Singapore’s GDP. The key electronics sectors in Singapore are:

Semiconductor

Started in the 1960s with just assemble and test facilities, there are now 14 wafer fabrication plants, 20 assembly and test companies, and about 40 Integrated Circuit Design centres.

Computer Peripherals

Singapore’s computer industry is about 30 years old and has evolved to produce a wide range of PCs, servers, computer peripherals and point-of-sale (POS) products. Singapore is the home to the world’s top 5 Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies where operations range from design and high-value manufacturing to supply chain management and regional management. Key players include Flextronics, Venture, Sanmina-SCI and Celestica.

Data Storage

Singapore is the leader in the manufacturing of high-end hard disk drives (HDD). Key players such as Seagate and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies have strong presence here. Increasingly, Singapore is also becoming a major storage media manufacturing site for world players like Showa Denko, Hoya and Seagate.

Infocomm & Consumer Electronics

This sector covers the production of flat panel TVs, DVD recorders, PCs, networking equipment, mobile devices and other digital consumer products. Companies are attracted to Singapore because of the established full value chain of services for operations such as R&D, manufacturing, supply chain management, logistics and regional headquarters.

Precision Engineering

From a low-technology and labour-intensive industry serving a few local manufacturing assembly plants, the precision engineering (PE) industry has evolved into a capital-intensive and high-technology industry supplying to the worldwide market, including multinational corporations.

The PE industry is a key pillar of Singapore’s manufacturing sector. In 2007, the industry generated an output of $24 billion and contributed to 13% of manufacturing value added. It is also one of the largest contributors of manufacturing employment, accounting for one out of four jobs in the sector. The industry is expected to generate an output of $28 billion and double its value-add to $10 billion by the year 2018. The PE value chain in Singapore covers the design and manufacturing of machinery and systems, as well as precision modules and components that go into the final products of various industries.

For the precision modules and components produced, PE companies here have an extensive track record in metal injection moulding, innovative surface treatment, plastic injection moulding, metal stamping, die-casting, rubber moulding or dispensing, printed circuit board assembly and box build. They form the backbone of crucial manufacturing clusters in Singapore such as the aerospace, electronics, precision equipment and medical devices.

As Singapore develops itself into a Centre of Precision Engineering Excellence offering cost effective manufacturing solutions for a diverse range of applications, Singapore PE companies account for 70% of the global market for semiconductor wire bonder units, 60% for auto axial insertion machines and 10% for household refrigerator compressors. Singapore is also home to 5 major semiconductor and industrial equipment manufacturers.
