Singapore’s infocomm industry is well poised to tap into growing opportunities in the digital age and is set to witness exciting developments in the years to come.

Intelligent Nation 2015 is Singapore’s 10-year masterplan to enable Singapore to harness and integrate resources across diverse organisations and to help Singapore plug into the globalised economy, creating some 80,000 additional jobs. Singapore aims to have a two-fold increase in value-add for the infocomm industry – to a figure of S$26 billion by 2015 – and a three-fold increase in export revenue to S$69 billion.

Important, too, is the adoption of broadband capabilities. Free wireless broadband connection is available in Singapore for three years from January 2007 under the Wireless@SG programme. Since September 2007, users have free access to 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in the Central Business District and Town Centres.

The infocomm industry contributes more than 4.6% of Singapore’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and revenue grew by nearly 20% to S$45.4 billion in 2006. The Infocomm industry’s revenue has hit S$40 billion for the first time in 2006, with a growth rate of 6%.

The Infocomm workforce in Singapore grew by 7.5% to about 120,000 people amidst a tightening labour market in 2006. The number of vacancies in the ICT sector hovered at about 2,100 jobs in 2006. About 23% of the vacancies were in software design, solution and development implementation. Salaries are rising in line with the demand for ICT workers, according to Hudson’s survey, top managers in the Information Technology and Telecommunications sector in Singapore are paid up to $750,000 annually.
