The interactive and digital media (IDM) sector is poised for growth, fuelled by many factors such as technological advancements, adoption trends in computing, broadband and mobile telephony. In addition, the emergence of open and powerful collaborative Web-based platforms has further upped the growth potential of the sector.
With intensifying international competition, Singapore is investing strategically to grow our IDM sector. The National Research Foundation has allocated S$500 million over the next 5 years to fund the development of a strategic IDM research programme and set up an IDM R&D Programme Office to spearhead the growth and development of Singapore’s IDM sector. Singapore aims to be the Global IDM Capital and the 2015 target for the IDM sector is to create 10,000 new jobs in Singapore. The industry is expected to be worth S$10 billion by 2018.
A number of high profile international game publishers and animation studios have chosen to invest in Singapore, including Lucasfilm, Koei, EA Games, Southern Star and Ubisoft. There is also a growing number of young people involved in animation and games projects. The Digital Media sector continues to be a vibrant sector with bright career prospects.
