A day in my life

  1. 7.00 am

My school day starts after a mere five-minute walk over from my flat. Along the way I marvel that Singapore’s streets really are as clean and green as I’d heard they were, so many years ago as a teenager. Makes me glad to be here, walking in this balmy weather with my daughter.

  2. 8.00 am

First class of the day is with the Primary 3s. They’re a fun lot, and have a good attitude towards their work. I also take the Primary 6 classes, whom I relate well to, as they’re nearer my daughter’s age.

  3. 10.40 am

A short break in the Staff Room while the students are at recess. One of the local teachers introduces me to a new Singaporean phrase and we all have a laugh while I try to twist my tongue around it. While language is a hurdle I have yet to overcome, it’s not too hard with the help of my colleagues.

  4. 2.00 pm

Books aside for this afternoon - I’m surrounded by a bevy of girls nimbly practising some traditional Chinese dance steps. As teacher-in-charge of the Chinese Dance co-curricular activity (CCA), I’m glad to promote a little Chinese culture where I can.

  5. 4.00 pm

My daughter, who has been waiting for me in the library, meets me to go home together. She’s settled in very well, and loves the local school system which allows her to spend time on things other than homework. I hope to see her go on to University here, and get her citizenship one day.

  6. 5.00 pm

Now that my husband’s also back, the whole family hops on to a bus to McRitchie Reservoir nearby. It’s just a five-minute ride to the scenic waters, where we cover the cross-country track. Facilities in Singapore are so handy, it’s easy to stay fit together; tomorrow we’ll probably swim at the neighbourhood swimming complex.

  7. 7.30 pm

Husband’s preparing dinner as usual - since he claims to be the better cook! Hope he learns to make that pork porridge that I’ve fallen in love with in Singapore, though it’s just as convenient to go out for it.

  8. 9.00 pm

A late call to my parents back in China. They’re disappointed that they can’t visit because of their poor health, but they’re very happy that I’m living here now. Anyway, keeping in touch isn’t a problem with affordable phone and internet lines easily available.

  9. 11.00 pm

With marking and housework out of the way, there’s still a little time for television before lights out. Goodnight!
